This week, NFL Commissioner ROGER GOODELL said that the league might consider dumping the extra point kick after a touchdown . . . because it’s TOO EASY.
He said, quote, “The extra point is almost automatic. I believe we had five missed extra points this year out of 1,200 some odd [attempts]. So it’s a very small fraction of the play, and you want to add excitement with every play.”
Goddell added that IF the extra point kick is dropped . . . the best proposal he’s heard is that you’d just immediately get seven points for a touchdown . . . and you COULD still opt to “go for two” to get an additional point.
The catch is, if you failed, you’d go back to just getting SIX points for the TD.
It’s unclear when the league’s competition committee would discuss this, but no change is expected for the upcoming season.
For what it’s worth, San Francisco 49ers kicker PHIL DAWSON is NOT onboard. He Tweeted, quote, “Eliminate PATs? Success rate too high? QBs better be careful. The forward pass is becoming increasingly efficient. #PenalizeProgress.”
