DAVID LEE ROTH has never been shy about his importance to VAN HALEN. But in a new interview, he pretty much took credit for EVERYTHING. And that’s almost not an exaggeration.
David was asked about his upcoming Vegas residency, and whether he had to get permission from the Van Halen brothers to play the old songs.
And he said, quote, “No. I wrote the songs. I wrote every word you heard, every syllable, every melody. I structured out even the guitar solos on that first album.
“Why do you think the solos [later] changed so radically? I sang the solos for ‘Jamie’s Cryin” and ‘Runnin’ With the Devil’.”
But it wasn’t just the music. He also said, quote, “I designed the backgrounds on the stage. I came up with the album covers. I thought of the stripes on the guitar. I’m the one who said, ‘Call it Van Halen.'”
(The interview was with KSHE 95 in St. Louis. You can listen to it here. This insanity starts at about 1:38.)
